About South Hero, Vermont
The town of South Hero (pop. approx. 1,700) lies at the southern tip of the Champlain Islands, a series of islands in northern Lake Champlain stretching into Canada. South Hero’s prime location in the valley between Vermont’s Green Mountains and New York’s Adirondack Mountains makes it a popular destination spot for tourists and an ideal region for agricultural productivity. The tempering waters of surrounding Lake Champlain give the islands a longer growing season than most areas of Vermont. While South Hero’s agrarian roots lie in dairy and apples, the town’s agricultural output is becoming more diversified. Several farmstands offer a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, and products such as organic pastured poultry, and even wines from a local vineyard are making their way into local markets.
