Connecting Students and Families to Local Farms

South Hero Land Trust has worked with teachers, parents, and community volunteers to promote agriculture and nature based education at Folsom Education and Community Center for over a decade. Through in-class activities and field trips to local farms and natural areas, the Land, The Farms and Me allows Folsom students to see first hand how South Hero’s natural and working landscapes impact their lives. In addition to curriculum development, South Hero Land Trust sponsors  visits to local farms and natural areas, including Allenholm Farm, Crescent Bay Farm, Hackett’s Orchard, Islandacres Farm, and Round Pond Natural Area. As the needs of the community have evolved, we have begun to adapt and expand this work.

In 2016 South Hero Land Trust began to work with staff, teachers, and parents, as well as colleagues at the Healthy Roots Collaborative, to build a farm to school program at Folsom. This includes working with kitchen staff to develop local sources of vegetables, eggs, meat, and bread for the cafeteria, engaging with the school garden to create a resource for farm to school curriculum, and continuing to sponsor field trips to local farms in South Hero. This is an evolving program, and one in which we are excited to play a role!
