Save Family Farms, Build Trails, and Support Local Food With a Gift to South Hero Land Trust Today

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This is the story of a family and the land they have loved for three generations, the story of a farm that could have been lost, the story of a community who came together to save a very special place in South Hero.

Crescent Bay Bed and Breakfast

In 1998, Fred and Gladys Lane were ready to retire, and like many farmers in Vermont, their land was their savings. They loved their farm on Crescent Bay, with acres of rich soils rolling down to the shores of Lake Champlain, and beautiful views of the mountains beyond. They wanted their son Dave and his wife Julie to continue working the family farm. But with two young sons and a house needing major renovations, the land was out of reach, and could have been lost forever.

So Dave and Julie called South Hero Land Trust, which had been founded just the year before. With help from the Vermont Land Trust and our community, we were able to buy a conservation easement on the property, allowing Dave and Julie to purchase the land from Fred and Gladys, and start planning their future at Crescent Bay Farm.

That was eighteen years ago. Now their sons, Nick and Alex, are grown. The farmhouse where they live is a cozy bed & breakfast. They built up a thriving maple sugar business. And in 2012 they purchased the neighboring Snow Farm Winery- reuniting two parcels that had once been one, and expanding the family farm.

The whole family works on the farm now. Dave and Nick spend winter days in the sugar bush, Alex cares for the grape vines, and Julie manages the tasting room. What was once a traditional Vermont dairy farm has been transformed into a diverse family business that welcomes the community year-round. The community who protected this special farm with South Hero Land Trust, and whose commitment has been honored with sweet maple syrup since.

I am so thankful for your support and partnership in this work. Your gifts to South Hero Land Trust allowed us to save hundreds of acres of farmland like Crescent Bay Farm and build community trails that help us all enjoy the outdoors. Other family farms, working forests and wildlife habitat are still at risk. Give the gift of family farms and local trails this holiday season.
