Volunteer Work Party: Tree Planting at Islandacres Trail

  • 260 U.S. 2 South Hero, VT, 05486 United States (map)

Join us for a volunteer work party on Thursday 10/29 from 1-4 pm! We will be planting trees along the Islandacres Trail that borders the Roy Marsh wetlands.

This planting is part of our Roy Marsh Buffer Restoration Project, a 9 acre section of Islandacres Farm. The wetland buffer protects water quality in Keeler Bay and provides valuable wildlife habitat. Over the past season, volunteers have been helping to prepare the site by removing invasive species. Now we are ready to plant 120 native trees and shrubs in areas with dying green ash and or high invasive species pressure. Come help us restore this critical wetland buffer!

Event info: Thursday 10/29 from 1-4pm. We will meet at the Roy Marsh trail parking lot on Station Rd. Feel free to join at anytime from 1-4pm that you are available, but let us know in advance so we can arrange to meet you. Snacks and beverages provided!

Questions? Email nora@shlt.org

NOTE: Islandacres Trail is currently CLOSED for hunting season, and we have special permission for this one tree planting event.

What to bring: Water bottle, gloves (we’ll have extra), and clothes/shoes you don’t mind getting dirty/wet. Waterproof boots best- we will be in a wetland! Optional: Kneepads for comfort while working and a chair for taking breaks. If you have your own shovel it never hurts to bring an extra.

Accessibility info: We will be walking ~.5 miles along a grass trail to access the tree planting site. Set up and prep tasks will be located on the trail. Trees will be planted off trail in an area that may have tall grass, uneven terrain, or wet sections. There is no bathroom available.

We will have a range of tasks and are happy to find one that works for you!

  • digging holes for bare root trees

  • putting together plastic tree tubes for deer protection

  • attaching tree tubes to stakes with zip ties

  • carrying trees to planting sites (bare root trees = very light, no heavy root ball!)

  • problem solving, moral support, conversation starter, and DJ
